Iceland’s data center industry is growing quickly, with rising revenues and a rapidly increasing number of jobs. According to Björn Brynjúlfsson, CEO of Borealis Data Center and Chairman of the Icelandic Data Center Industry Association, Iceland is well positioned to benefit from growing global demand for data center services, largely driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence.
Iceland offers several advantages for data center operations. The country’s cool and stable climate allows for efficient and environmentally friendly cooling, and reliable access to renewable energy strengthens its competitiveness.
The sector is also contributing significantly to Iceland’s economy. Export revenues from telecommunications, computer, and information services reached around ISK 110 billion last year, an increase of about 50 percent compared with 2024. This growth is largely linked to the expansion of the data center industry.
Employment in the sector has also increased. Around 120 people worked in Icelandic data centers at the end of 2024, compared with 85 in 2022. Estimates suggest the number may now be closer to 200 as investment and expansion continue.
Brynjúlfsson says the outlook for the industry is positive, but that clearer national policy could further support its development. He notes that other Nordic countries have already taken steps to better define how data centers fit into their broader industrial strategy.
